rugby world cup: day 21 (quarter finals)

Alan Lewis has words with South Africa captain John SmitSouth Africa 37—20 Fiji: that score-line flatters the Boks. It wasn’t until 67 minutes that they pulled more than a converted try clear; ten minutes earlier fourteen-man Fiji had scored two tries in two minutes to level the scores and the Boks looked on the verge of imploding. Anything could have happened especially if Ifereimi Rawaqahad had managed to get the ball down, but the Boks regained the lead though not their composure. South Africa do not look like potential champions.

Argentina 19—13 Scotland: once Filipe Contepomi replied with interest to Dan Parks early penalty the result of this game never looked in doubt — at least not until the final moments when Argentinian running down the clock while only six points ahead gave a mistake-prone Scotland two late 5-metre lineouts.

Nick Evans crosses for the All Blacks fourth tryNew Zealand 85—8 Romania: another try-fest (13 — how many have England scored in the whole competition so far?). Four games; four wins; four bonus points; the All Black machine marches on (apparently) effortlessly. About the only hope for their opponents is that they’ve found it all so easy so far that they won’t remember how to find top-gear; personally, I wouldn’t bet on it. Romania can be proud to go home from the competition with 5 hard-won points.

Australia 37—6 Canada: an error-strewn second-string Australia still put a bonus-point victory over Canada together together; only they and New Zealand will top their pools with 20 points (four games; four bonus-point victories).

Kele Leawere scores Fiji’s third tryWales 34—38 Fiji: tragedy, but Fiji deserved the win and Wales didn’t. Fiji played out of their skins; to beat them Wales needed to do the same for 80 minutes: they didn’t — game over. At least, it was a brilliant game, perhaps genuinely a classic. Gareth said to judge him on the World Cup: selection errors; gameplan errors; inability to play from kick-off; it’s time to go and time for Wales to start rebuilding for 2011.

Scotland 18—16 Italy: Scotland grind out a marginal victory in a game were neither side showed particular skill or ambition. Can’t they go back and offer Tonga (or maybe Portugal) a place in the quarter-finals; neither of these teams deserve it.

David Penalva scoresItaly 31—5 Portugal: after a scintillating start Italy have to grind their way to victory of a feisty and surprisingly well-organised Portugal. Disappointing for Italy who were expected to win a bonus point, but lacked a cutting edge; on that performance, Scotland will fancy their chances of making the quarter-finals. Portugal have won a lot of friends in this tournament.

Sean Lamont bursts throughScotland 42—0 Romania: a solid and convincing win from Scotland, although Jason White is right to say they must raise their game before they face New Zealand — even if he doesn’t admit that’s just to achieve a respectable defeat. Romania looked as if they hadn’t regained their wind after their heroic effort against Italy.

Halfway through the pool stage maybe it’s time to do a quick look at the ‘progress’ of the Home Nations; looks at it in points order tells it’s own surprising story:
Scotland (10 points): the favourites to drop out in the pool stage are the only team to play anywhere near their best so far in the tournament, and if they can beat — or even draw with — Italy they should  go through with the bonus points they’ve garnered.
Ireland (9 points): two unconvincing — albeit winning — performances and both Argentina and France to come. The French game could go either way, depending on which French team turns up, but the Irish may well come to rue not getting that bonus point against Georgia. Whatever, they certainly don’t look like semi-finalists.
Wales (5 points): they need to beat Fiji to be certain of going through but will not progress beyond the quarter-finals. But there are worrying signs of discontent in the camp. Barring a miracle, Gareth is doomed as the sub-standard first halves look to be down to the gameplan more than the players; his problem is that a revised approach is likely to be read as being a result of the diminution of his authority, rather than of his successful coaching.
England (4 points): slow, dismal, lacking in vision. Jake White pretty well summed up their position when he said: ‘ I think, to be fair, they’re going to have to play much better than they did today if they’re going to beat Samoa.’ — and he probably should have added ‘and Tonga’. The question is not whether they can retain the trophy but whether they can make the quarter-finals.

Italy 24—18 Romania: the Romanians made life diffcult for Italy, and the failure to get a bonus point may cost the Azzurri dear.

Luke Thompson (Japan)Japan 31—35 Fiji: Japan bounced back from their thrashing by Australia with their spirit intact; the final minutes as Japan kept the ball in play beyond the 80 minutes fighting desperately for a match-winning try were probably the most thrilling of the tourament so far. John Kirwan was bitterly disappointed but he should be proud of those guys.

USA 15—25 Tonga: the Eagles looked as if they had not recovered from their battle with England and must be kicking themselves for those wasted chances.

Australia and New Zealand: scarily good.

England: nevermind South Africa, Samoa and Tonga must be licking their lips after that unmotivated and inept — albeit winning — performance: especially, as England will by then have been nicely tenderised by South Africa.

Italy: yeah, that quarter-final berth is a realistic target.

USA: hey guys, you seriously do not deserve to come bottom of that group.

Japan: if only you came taller and heavier; you each had more commitment and passion that the whole England team.
